Dr. Boothe

Since opening its doors in 1987, the Boothe Eye Care and Laser Center has steadily distinguished itself as the preeminent provider of corrective vision services in the country. Over the last three decades, hundreds of thousands of patients have walked out the doors of the Plano, Texas-based clinic, with crystal clear vision and an opportunity for an improved quality of life.

William A. Boothe, M.D., the founder of the Laser Center, is one of the world’s most talented and experienced laser surgeons, having performed more than 115,000 LASIK surgeries and more than 69,000 INTRALASIK procedures in his career. His extensive experience with laser surgery dates back to the early 1990s when the technology first became a major breakthrough in the field of refractive eye surgery. A pioneer in the practice, Dr. Boothe became one of the first three surgeons in the Dallas, Texas, area to be to be trained on vision correction techniques using lasers. He then became the first surgeon in Texas to offer the laser surgery services at his practice in Plano.

In 1999, Dr. Boothe earned the award for VISX Surgeon of the Year, performing more VISX Custom 3-Dimensional Wavefront Customized laser procedures than any other surgeon in the world. LASIK and INTRALASIK treatments today have become the most highly sought procedures in the refractive eye surgery. While many surgeons have since begun to offer excimer laser technologies at their practices, few can say they were among the first to shape and master the technique that is widely adopted in laser surgery today.

Over the course of three decades, Dr. Boothe has continually upgraded the vision center, determined to uncover the very latest technological advances in the field and acquire the most advanced systems available. What motivates him is the desire to provide the best possible results for his patients. Because of his persistence, the Boothe Laser Center today is fully equipped with state-of-the-art laser systems. These include the Wavefront-customized LASIK system, which creates a highly detailed computer-generated map of each patient’s eye, enabling the laser to shape the corneal tissues with extraordinary precision. Another is the VISX STAR S4, which employs “ActiveTrak” technology to monitor the patient’s eye movements in three dimensions, increasing accuracy and allowing for faster healing following the procedure.

Born and raised in the state of Texas, Boothe attended Rice University as an undergraduate and earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He completed his residency at Texas Tech University School of Ophthalmology and went on to intern at Presbyterian Hospital in Internal Medicine. He then completed a cornea fellowship at the Cornea-External Disease Division of the Jules Stein Eye Institute (University of California Los Angeles Medical School).

Throughout his education, Boothe set himself apart on numerous occasions. In addition to becoming one of the first cornea specialists to be trained on vision correction techniques, he was also one of the first surgeons in the nation to use the microkeratome, a handheld blade designed to create the initial corneal flap during LASIK treatment, an extremely delicate procedure requiring tremendous skill and coordination.

Dr. Boothe is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of numerous professional associations in Texas. Even as an authority on laser surgery practices today, he never resigns himself to his current knowledge and experience, but strives to find new ways to improve results for the thousands of new patients who come to his clinic every year. This drive for excellence has transformed this world-class clinic into the standard of care for corrective vision services around the world.
